Baptists from Hungary visit Godmanchester

Baptists from Hungary visit Go

The link between two Baptist churches in the twinned towns of Godmanchester and Szentendre has been strengthened by a visit to the UK of 18 Hungarians.

During their recent five-day stay, the party visited historic sites in Ely, Cambridge as well as Godmanchester. 'They were very interested in our Roman history,' said Rachel Thurley, who organised a local tour, which included a visit to Island Hall and to see the finds from an archaeological dig in her own garden.

The visit also included opportunity for both churches to share news and discover more about each other's work.

'We were able to show our guests the energetic midweek and Sunday children's and youth work we do here, including our Friday Night Project (FNP) youth club,' said Daniel Beckett, the children's and youth minister at Godmanchester Baptist Church, 'I was very pleased that the Mayor was also able to come and see the 60 or so teenagers enjoying themselves at FNP.'

The Hungarian team also took part in GBC's innovative and award winning D-Caf, a café-style church for young adults which meets on Wednesday evenings.

Sunday church services completed a busy schedule and at which the Szentendre Baptist Church minister, Zsolt Dani, was the guest speaker.
The trip has strengthened the connections between the churches and plans are being drawn up for young people from Szentendre to travel to Godmanchester later in the year, as well as the sharing of resources, ideas and news on a regular basis.
