The Unexpected: a 40-day devotional for living with unexpected times by Iona Rossely

An engaging devotional book, which has much to commend, particularly if used alongside journalling

The first thing which struck me about this book is its beautiful appearance. Hardback, and illustrated by the author, its unusual and colourful look draws you in.

It has a simple format: each of the 40 days has a suggested scripture to read (from which one or two verses are printed in the book), a story from Iona’s life with linked thoughts, and a prayer. Some of the stories originate from the worst of the Covid pandemic, but many are from more ordinary times, under the headings Trust, Faith, Christian Living, Prayer, Encouragement, Purpose, Worship, Strength, and God Answered.

Some people, if they are not animal lovers, may struggle with a few of the stories which are based on her love for her horses and pets.

The style is simple and encouraging, which is appropriate for a devotional book, although occasionally she repeats truths, such as needing to trust in God, which we know but are not quite as simple as the book suggests to put into practice.

However it is an engaging book, and for a change of style for devotions, perhaps with journalling to expand on, and grapple further with, her themes, or as a gift, the book has much to commend it.
