Sowing the seeds of success…

Introducing Operation Agri's latest harvest resource, which shows the impact the Baptist development charity and its partners are having on people around the world

'There is a huge difference between our traditional way of farming and the new method that we have been taught. My harvest is much bigger than before,' declares Marita (pictured right).

Her friend Ruth (left) says, 'When I was collecting the maize stalks, and laying them on my field, my neighbours laughed at me. But when the dry spell came, they were amazed that I was still able to harvest.'

You can meet Ruth, Marita and others in Operation Agri’s harvest video pack Sowing Success in Malawi. One of the world’s poorest countries, Malawi suffers from climate change with floods and droughts which can devastate harvests. OA is supporting a project begun by local pastors to train village people in new practical ways to sow, nourish and protect crops.

Operation Agri is a Baptist development charity supporting Christian-led rural and urban development projects, showing the love of Jesus in action by attacking basic causes of poverty among some of the most disadvantaged people in the world, regardless of their religious, ethnic or cultural backgrounds.

A Nepal Baptist Church development team, with OA’s support, have supplied a community with irrigation pumps, drainage pipes, pre-school resources, and training to grow vegetables, or mushrooms, and even sew soft toys or make soap to earn an income.

The team work with Christians and non-Christians helping them “know who Christ is with our practice, our action and our perception.”

This poor, marginalised community now have confidence to improve their lives. Mr Harkar Magar says, 'We used to rely on rain water but now we have sufficient water to grow throughout the year.

'Not only that but we learnt vegetable farming skill too. Now I can grow vegetables in season and off season and generate income. I am very grateful to the team for transforming our lives.'

Operation Agri works with Christian partners in ten counties and has close relations with BMS World Mission. OA supports sustainable development such as agricultural training for farmers, water and irrigation schemes, basic health clinics, women’s empowerment groups in urban slums and education for marginalised and underprivileged children.
